It is not necessary to tie a knot in the end of the fiber for this method of securing the fiber before the beginning stitch. The needle is inserted from the top down on the canvas (refer above for placement of the knot within the design on the canvas). Then pull the fiber up through a hole close to where the fiber initially entered the canvas (#l ). Insert the needle in the hole directly below the hole where you first brought the needle up (#2 below). Then bring the needle up again in the hole directly to the right of the hole where you first brought the needle up (#3 below), and finally insert the needle in the hole where you first brought the needle up (#4 below). You will notice that you have just stitched an "L", which will strongly secure your fiber on the canvas for your first stitch. This stitch can usually be worked over completely with your needlepoint stitches without needing to be clipped. You will only want to clip the tail that is created before the securing "L" stitch was finished.
